I have an Oculus that I let my patient with dementia use sometimes & he enjoys going to places he used to visit before his condition became worst. He doesn’t have much time left so I’m hoping it helps.

I just realized that my late grandmother had dementia 2-3 years before her death, poor her, it deteriorates her. I should've put this VR unit, or even other kinds of joy, she should've learn UA-cam I bet that could help to, should've bought her iPad

Maybe that's just a prototype. I guess they might be able to make very realistic graphics when they can sell it on a wider market.

A very noble pursuit and empathic use of the technology; that was quite emotional to watch, bless you all. It was wonderful to see their spirits lifted and the joy in their faces: it gave this technology a powerfully therapeutic calling.

Invest in a 360 camera and get footage of a day in the life right now, perhaps just of your living room with your spouse and kids just watching TV. Perhaps take it outside and film a location where you frequently sat as a child, or as a young adult. Although you may not remember doing it, you might be thankful you did it in the future.

My grandmother was going through dementia (shes just recently passed), and I brought my vive over to her to see her reaction, this is way before there were people using VR with dementia patients and I really didn't know what to expect. I decided I would put her in the photogrammetry scene of the whelsh church and have her teleport around and check things out. She had difficulty figuring out the teleporting but ended up sitting by the wall where you can view out into the town. She must have been there for about an hour, seeing the birds fly around and admiring where she was. Truly transported. We (my family was there to observe behavior as well) noticed right after she was far more cognitive than she has ever been in months. I theorized that giving a dementia patient presence in VR helps build old connections in their brain, temporarily. Something about the brain familiarized with reality and trying to make a connection with virtual reality speeds this up and we can see immediate effects that last for a few hours. I took my observations to a family member that works for the University of Queensland that is leading in a lot of medical research using VR and they compiling findings about dementia and VR. There have been more than a few new companies growing that offer a VR service to dementia patients and it has been a huge success. We all knew VR would change the world, but having it actually happen right in front of us is truly amazing. I really hope that care homes and medical centers start using VR once it becomes easier to use. VR is going to help a lot of people in ways we have never imagined. Though goes without being said, VR can also potentially hurt a lot too. We must be vigilant in the discoveries of VR and how it's impacting society and it's use.

Regarding the elderly/disabled: With the complexity of video games & technology nowadays patients could visit museums, national parks, zoos, castles; tour a city or historical landmarks, see the world wonders - or even partake in activities they used to enjoy like mountain climbing, parachuting, skiing, fishing, hiking, deep sea diving, hunting, hang gliding, flying a plane; or just relax on a beach or explore a rainforest - I mean the possibilities truly are endless! The *therapeutic potential* of VR for the elderly/disabled is absolutely something that should be invested in. To experience things inaccessible to you due to your mental or physical limitations is something that *needs* government funding & should be looked at as a *legitimate* form of healing & wellness. The boundless potential! It's a no-brainer, wouldn't you agree?

God, I hope someday we get to provide our elders something close to "San Junipero" kinda of thing, you know? Because you can see they just have so, so much life left in them still, despite their situation. Like, can you imagine how fucking cool that would be? Say what you wanna say, but technology is our greatest good and, hopefully, mankind will learn how to make good use of it someday.
